Quick picks by goal
- Most Discord-like open source: Fluxer — familiarity first; federation still planned.
- Privacy / federation: Element — Matrix flagship; expect a learning curve.
- Decentralized dark horse: Armada — highest Trust in this set if you can migrate a community.
- Conservative all-rounder: Stoat — excellent UX, proven longevity.
- Fun / social identity: Nerimity — bold UI, denser social features.
- Closed-source Discord-like: Osmium — darker theme, excellent UX; still a hard sell vs Fluxer.
- Guilded-style corporate: Root — polished client, weakest Trust score in the set.
- Proximity / spatial hangout: Yapper — gorgeous free self-host map chat; fun with friends, not a Discord replacement.

How to choose a Discord alternative
Start with constraints: do you need open source, federation, or native mobile? Then decide what you will sacrifice — polish, population, or privacy absolutism. Finally run the quiz to weight reputation, look & design, ease of use, features, and popularity.
